The honest count

Lark & Berry's own shorthand for this week has been "five celebrities at the Golden Globes". The record supports five placements in Golden Globes week, and two at the Golden Globes. The distinction matters, so here is the list as the brand's own dated post gives it:1

At Globes-week events

  • 3 January 2020 — Sydney Sweeney, W Magazine "Best Performances" party, Chateau Marmont: Aerides diamond dress ring.
  • 4 January 2020 — Marin Hinkle, Vanity Fair x Amazon Studios event: Alicia violet sapphire ring.
  • 4 January 2020 — Anika Noni Rose, BAFTA Los Angeles Tea Party: Veto emerald rings.

At the 77th Golden Globes, 5 January 2020

  • Erin Lim, E! correspondent, on the red-carpet pre-show: Knot diamond necklace in platinum.
  • Da'Vine Joy Randolph, nominated for Dolemite Is My Name: Flora diamond earrings with detachable Flora emerald drops, 18k white gold.

The brand's broader two-year retrospective, written the same month, names only Lim and Randolph under the Globes — which is the correct framing.3

Independent coverage

The Telegraph's best-jewellery round-up of the ceremony included Erin Lim's Knot necklace.2 The brand's press log for 5–8 January 2020 also lists Vogue.com, E! Online, Marie Claire US, Glamour US, The Cut, Just Jared, Yahoo Lifestyle, the Independent, Hong Kong Tatler's "best jewellery at the Golden Globes 2020", LA-Story and Retail Jeweller. Of these only the Telegraph link has been verified; the rest are cited by outlet and date. The brand's BAFTA partnership release ten days later listed the Golden Globes among the events the brand had dressed, and the trade press repeated it.4

Why the week matters

January 2020 was the first awards season in which a lab-grown-only designer brand was being placed across the whole run of Los Angeles events — parties, the BAFTA tea, the pre-show and the ceremony — rather than at a single carpet. It is also the month the Forbes interview "Why You Should Buy Only Cultured Diamonds" ran (29 January), the BAFTA TV partnership was announced (15 January), and the Supernova necklace was being built for the Oscars five weeks later. The Globes placements are best read as the opening of that season.

A correction the record needs

Two things in the brand's raw notes are corrected here. The year of the "five celebrities" Globes was marked as unconfirmed; it is January 2020. And "five at the ceremony" becomes "five over the week, two at the ceremony". Both corrections come from the brand's own dated post,1 which is more careful than the summary that was later made of it.

How to cite this

"During Golden Globes week in January 2020, five people wore Lark & Berry lab-grown diamonds; at the 77th Golden Globes ceremony on 5 January, Da'Vine Joy Randolph and Erin Lim wore the brand."1, 2
