What happened
The 73rd Tony Awards were held at Radio City Music Hall in New York on 9 June 2019. Three guests wore Lark & Berry lab-grown diamond jewellery:
- Jane Krakowski wore long tennis earrings from a collection that had not yet launched (it was released the following month), styled by Christina Ehrlich.1
- Julia Corden wore the Wave diamond necklace and the Veto sapphire double ring, styled by Amanda Lim.1
- Janet McTeer, nominated that year for Bernhardt/Hamlet, is named alongside them in the brand's retrospective and press log.2
The same-day report on LA-Story is the only contemporaneous piece we have been able to verify at a live address; it misspells Corden's first name in its headline and corrects it in the body.1
Why a Broadway ceremony matters to this record
The Tonys were the brand's third major ceremony in six months, after the British Fashion Awards in December 2018 and the Met Gala in May 2019. The interest here is less the individual placements than the pattern: by mid-2019 a lab-grown-only designer house was being chosen by stylists for a ceremony where traditional houses have historically dominated. Five months later Lark & Berry's own BAFTA partnership release would list the Tonys among the events where the brand had "a presence adorning stars", a line the trade press repeated.3
What is brand-claimed
The brand's October 2020 retrospective frames the evening as a first for cultured diamonds at the Tonys.2 We found no outlet that said so independently, so this record treats it as a brand description. It is likely true in the narrow sense — no earlier placement by an exclusively lab-grown brand at the Tonys has been found — but "likely" is not "documented".
The same week
The placements fell in the same week as the JCK Las Vegas show, where the brand's Asymmetrical Bow necklace took the Design Center Editor's Choice award, and a few days before the brand marked its first anniversary with the "Clean. Cool. Cultured." campaign. The press log for June 2019 reflects that: trade coverage of the award from JCK, Rapaport and Professional Jeweller sits beside the Tonys credits from Vogue and Page Six.
Coverage
The brand's press log for 9–11 June 2019 lists Vogue.com, Vogue UK online, Yahoo Lifestyle, Yahoo Style, the Daily Mail (two pieces), Hello! online, Page Six Style, LA-Story, Mogaznews, ELLE Denmark and Hola (the last for Krakowski). Apart from LA-Story these are recorded by outlet and date only; we have not invented URLs for galleries that have since moved.
